Dallas Summer Staycation GuideIf your summer budget has no room for a vacation this year, there are lots of fun ways to make your "DFW Summer Staycation" one to remember without breaking the bank!

Summer Staycation Guide Tips

Here are some tips on how to get started and how to plan ahead to save some extra cash:

What do THEY want to do? Ask the kids to brainstorm a list of ideas that they want to do for a vacation.

What do YOU want to do? Parents should get a voice in this as well! There are so many resources to find ideas…from local magazines (Ad Pages) to free fun websites, including MyDFWMommy.com- just check out our around town section!

Make a Plan. Sit down as a family and plan out your week. Use coupons, entertainment deals and free activities to stretch your dollar.  Take advantage of restaurants that offer free meals for kids.  Using these savings tactics might allow you to splurge and get a hotel for one or two nights during the week to make you feel as if you really have “gotten away”.

Try Something New! Use the “out-of-the-box” thinking to come up with something new and fun for the family.  Hiking in a cave, going on a scavenger hunt, zip-lining, visiting thrift shops. The ideas are limitless!

Quality Time. Some of the best times are right down the road at your local park.  The key is giving kids what they want and that is time with you. Fish with them, ride bikes, fly a kite, play in the stream, have a picnic and chat with them.

Here are some ideas in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to get you started. Plus, don’t forget to visit Groupon and LivingSocial for discounts on local things to do with the family!

For local attraction discounts, check out Pogo Pass, a family based entertainment pass, that gets pass holders into some of the best venues in Dallas. Head over here and use code MYDFWMOMMY and get 60% off (you’ll pay $49.98 instead of $124.95). Just Hawaiian Falls and the Fort Worth Zoo are over $40 by themselves! And don't forget about CityPASS. It has just come to the Dallas area and is a booklet of admission tickets to the best attractions in a single city. You’ll save up to 50% compared to combined regular box office prices!

Other great resources include the Entertainment Book and GoldStar for half-price entertainment events!

And of course, remember to take advantage of all the Kid’s Summer Free Events!

All you Can Eat Seats

Spend $48 per person and chow away!  Group discounts are also available. Or, fans who bring a Takis bag to the box office, or use the online coupon code TAKIS will receive $35 all you can eat tickets.

  • Cholula All You Can Eat Seats are located in the upper home run deck
  • Tickets include all you can eat grilled chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, nachos, and soft drinks
  • Pricing for groups of 20 or more ranges from $38 - $50
  • Food service begins when the gates open and ends at the end of the 7th inning, or 2.5 hours after the first pitch
  • Individual tickets start at $48

You are in AIR CONDITIONING. Your seats are still outside in the blazing heat, but you can come in and cool down anytime you want. The price continues to increase, so the savings value is a bit "iffy".  But it's worth considering if you plan on eating at the park!

Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 9.51.45 AMOther Ways to Save on Tickets

*** Buy the cheap seats as low as $6-$14.  (I found these deals on StubHub). These are the outer 5 sections of the upper deck with a nice view of the field. (right side of the field you could get shade).  Get the first couple of rows in that section. Plus if the game isn't crowded you could potentially move down a few rows, but I suggest you wait at least 3 innings as people come late.

Note: If you're going during the day, try to sit in the shade. Most seats behind the outfield wall in right are under an overhang which will keep you out of the sun most of the time. At night, right field/first baseline seats are your best bet.

***Compare ticket brokers.  SeatGeekVivid Seats and Ticket Down are just a few examples.  Note: Ticket Monster & StubHub are ticket brokers that list an all-inclusive price up front, so you know immediately how much the total cost will be.  Be aware of high dollar service and shipping fees and make sure to shop and compare to get the most savings.

***Check out fan forums. you could find a super hot deal here. Many members are genuine fans that don't want the hassle of selling and will give away tickets for the games they can't attend.

***Wait it out The closer you get to game day the more prices drop, as resellers naturally would rather settle for less of a profit over no sale at all.

***Bid on Tickets at ScoreBig. Let's be honest, most ticket broker sites are the same but this one is actually different. It is kind of like the Priceline of sports tickets. Just search events in your area, and make an offer on tickets and get an instant answer on whether your bid is accepted.

***Check out Citywide Events (your company must be a member and give you a login code). $40 Cost- Get 4 vouchers for FOUR absolutely FREE Sunday through Thursday home game tickets - Redeemed at the Box Offices (2 of the 4 vouchers are good for Lower Reserved, Lexus Club Terrace, Upper Box or Upper Reserved Levels and the Other 2 vouchers are good for Upper Box, Upper Reserved, or Grandstand Levels) All 4 tickets may be upgraded to the Corner Box for $15 per ticket - Redeemed at the box office only. PLUS 12 Vouchers 50% OFF tickets for home game tickets Valid for Corner Box, Lower Reserved, Lexus Club Terrace, Upper Box or Upper Reserved Levels - Redeemed online or at the box office. BONUS - you also will receive $250.00 off an Upper Level suite rental when you contact the Suites Sales. Suite Rental excludes 05/15, 06/26 and 10/2 home games.

2016 Texas Rangers Baseball Game Discounts and Deals

Food

The Rangers have a fairly liberal policy on bringing food and drink into the stadium. That doesn't mean you can pack a massive cooler, though!

  • Container Policy & Bag Inspections

No metal cans, glass containers or alcoholic beverages may be carried into the ballpark. Only soft-sided, collapsible coolers without plastic inserts are allowed - no hard coolers, backpacks, or oversized bags. All bags and purses must be 16"x16"x8" or smaller and are subject to search by ballpark staff.

  • Alcoholic Beverage Policy & Non-Alcohol Section

Section 335 has been designated as a non-alcohol section at Globe Life Park. Sales and consumption of beer are strictly prohibited in this section. Beer sales will be discontinued in all seating areas after the 7th inning and at concession stands after the 8th inning or two and one-half hours subsequent to the start of a single game, whichever occurs first. Sales may also be discontinued earlier, and in specific areas if necessary, at the discretion of Rangers management. Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission (TABC) prohibits alcohol being brought into or out of Globe Life Park in Arlington. TABC regulations also prohibit alcohol being taken from the main or upper concourses onto the club or suite levels, or taken off the club and suite levels to any other areas of the ballpark. The Texas Rangers remind guests to drink responsibly.

Congratulations to Globe Life Park in Arlington for giving us the opportunity to save some money.  Bring some waters and snacks for the kids.

One thing Texans can always count on is some of the highest electric bills in the country due to sweltering summers and big houses.  The average Texas household spends $148 per month on electricity, according to a recent report by WalletHub. Only five other states see residents spending more. Here are some ways to save on energy bills.

Being on the wrong plan could be costing you. The Texas electricity market was deregulated in January 2002, which gave consumers tons of options for choosing a provider, but not a lot of people got a primer of what the rules were and how to take the best advantage of them.

EFL label*Legacy providers don’t rule. Original providers aren’t the only companies that can offer solid, uninterrupted service. And don’t believe the fallacy that customers of legacy providers get serviced first when your power goes out. Oncor Electric Delivery is responsible for maintaining the transmission system. Everybody uses Oncor to handle repairs in our region. *Note: as part of your bill you pay Oncor AND the retail electric provider.

*Use this savings calculator to learn what you should be paying or read your EFL (Energy Facts Label) on your bill. We all have our own energy usage DNA.  We all use it differently and at different times.  LEARN you usage DNA and shop the best plan according to how much you use.

*Don’t think, “what’s my rate” for best savings. If you look at most of these programs, the vast majority of the offers are not a rate, they’re a curve—different prices for each quantity of kilowatt-hours that are consumed. That means you might get that great promotional rate if you use between, say, 1,500 and 2,000-kilowatt hours in a month. But fall above or go below? Higher rates. Throw in hidden charges and you’ve got the makings of a monster electricity bill.

*Switching is good. Act under the assumption that you should switch companies every six months or year. The market is constantly changing.

*Don't “balance bill.”  I understand needing a consistent payment every month, BUT statistics show you may be paying WAY too much. How about budgeting $250 and your bill is $70 on low months and $200 on high months! You just got a raise!

*Don't let contracts scare you.  I was in a contract, however, I paid $150 to get OUT of my contract and still saved $700 a year. WHAT???? Yep, that’s how much I was overpaying!

Comparison shop. With over 600 energy retailers and 1500 plans, how in the heck are we supposed to figure it out?

Screen Shot 2015-12-29 at 11.30.42 AMI used Energy Ogre to comparison shop for me. It's a Texas-based technology company that actively monitor thousands of offers and matches them to a consumer’s actual electricity usage, resulting in maximum savings.

Energy Ogre CEO Jesson Bradshaw says, “We started Energy Ogre because folks weren’t getting the benefits of deregulation. Most people realize that there are probably better solutions out there but because the process can be overly complicated and confusing, and because people are frankly too busy to spend a lot of their time studying all the options, most people are in plans that don’t fit them correctly.  People are shocked when they find out how much they are overpaying,” says Bradshaw.

Energy Bill 1Just what kind of money are we talking about? Energy Ogre is able to report that most of its customers have been able to save between 40% and 60% after enrolling in the program. All for about the cost of a monthly Netflix membership.  Just read their reviews on the Facebook page.

I live in a 3200 square foot home.  Look at my savings.  I anticipate during the summer that I will pay $150 based on my new terms, which is a $250 savings a month during the summer.

Energy Ogre is not paid by energy companies for preferential treatment—their only allegiance is to its customers. When consumers sign up for their program, Energy Ogre becomes their “limited agent,” getting access to their historical usage of electricity. From this, a demand curve is created. “We have up to 2,000 rate curves in our system, updated every day,” Bradshaw said. “We take your demand curve and run it against every supply curve we have and find a program that best matches your usage mathematically.”

Once Energy Ogre is the limited agent, they make changes on behalf on their customers based on that math. This takes the hassle out of dealing with an energy provider. It also means Energy Ogre often suggests switching from one plan to another to take advantage of a low rate.

*Shop around on your own. Many of us know about the state’s website, The Power to Choose allowing you to compare rates and plans. Take the knowledge from the EFL and apply it to current plans.  Don’t get locked into a yearly plan though as prices and deals consistently change which means you can save even more. Customers should routinely be making changes, taking advantage of every great deal that comes along.

Wow, cable can be expensive!  The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says the average American spends around $65 a month — nearly $800 a year — on cable. We spend much more in our home! The NDP Group says it’s more like $90 a month, and estimates it’ll hit $200 by 2020. But there are indeed, many ways to save on cable bills!

But there are a ton of options to make cutting your cable bill very easy, thanks to the new streaming services available!  It can be confusing, so here is some information on deciding which option is best for you!

It really comes down to how many channels you want, which channels you watch and when you watch them.

Here are some options at “cutting the cord” and saving well over 50% off your cable bill.

Get an AntennaScreen Shot 2015-12-29 at 10.02.13 AM The modern equivalent of the old-school “rabbit ears,” which can cost under $10 and gives free access to network content. Here are some of my favorite choices for antenna’s. It’s not on-demand (unless you get a recording device), but for live events like the Super Bowl this is a great option.

Sling TV ($20 per month) Did you know the average household gets 200 channels, but only watches 18 of them. If that’s you, and you want to be up to the minute, then check out Sling TV. Sling allows you to live stream 20 channels, like ESPN, CNN and The Food Network. You’ll have access to movies, too.

PlayStation Vue ($49.99 per month) The new PlayStation Vue live streams TV, and offers 50 channels, movies and recording/playback functionality. It requires a PlayStation (PS4 or PS3 ). Right now the service is offered in DFW, Miami, New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Amazon Prime
($8.25 per month) Similar to Netflix and Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime offers TV shows, movies and original series, but – instead of a month-to-month commitment – you sign up for a $99 one-year membership.  Right now you can get a 30 day trial for FREE!

Hulu Plus ($7.99 per month) If you can hold out a day for your favorite shows, then Hulu Plus offers a variety of popular shows the day after they air. You’ll have access to movies and original series as well.

Netflix ($7.99-11.99 per month) Hate ads?  Neftlix is your choice. Netflix has seasons of network cable shows, movies and original series, like Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards.

Time.com has a great article on deciding what kind of watcher you are and planning alternatives from The Basic Cable Junkie, The Prestige TV Grazer, The Serial Binger to Sports Fans.

For example: For Sports Fans

If you want—or need—to see a significant number of your local teams’ games, I’m going to stop right here. This is one area where streaming services can’t yet fully deliver. Local games are generally exclusive to regional sports networks, and you’ll still need cable for that. There’s also the issue of some online services being a little more unstable than die-hard fans might like.  HOWEVER, there are often ways for you to watch online!  We watch our sons games through a school program live online when we can’t be there in person.

However, if you’re a more casual sports fan or a supporter of an out-of-market team, cord cutting is still a worthwhile option. Sling TV will give you ESPN and ESPN 2 in addition to a handful of basic cable channels for $20 a month, and for another $5 you can get even more sports options, including ESPN U, ESPNEWS, and the SEC Network. Add in an indoor TV antenna and you’ll also have access to network sports.

For supporters of teams outside your local area, some sport-specific streaming options might also be attractive. Each major sports league offers some sort of online viewing option for somewhere in the neighborhood of $110 a year, with the caveat that local games are blacked out. (NFL fans can pay only $69.99 to watch any team they like, but must make do with replays.)

The Plan (option 1): Sling TV with sports package and an indoor TV antenna.

Price: $308.50 per year ($25.70 per month).

Savings: $490.82 per year ($40.90 per month).

The Plan (option 2): Sling TV with sports package, indoor TV antenna, and one sport-specific streaming package.

Price: $418.50 per year ($34.88 per month).

Savings: $380.82 per year ($31.74 per month).

You could buy about 12 additional seasons of television before cable becomes less expensive.

Ways to Save on Retail

Want to save some extra money this year!  There are a TON of ways to save every time you make a purchase.  It only takes a few minutes of your time to save sometimes a significant amount on everyday purchases.  Here are my tips on ways to save on retail.

Let someone else save for you!

ways to save on retailUse a Shopping WatchdogParibus is a shopping watchdog.  It's a free app that uses patent pending technology to sync with your email to scan for receipts. When the program detects a receipt from a supported store such as Amazon and Macy's, it checks for price decreases as well as any coupons or promo codes. When a drop is detected, Paribus automatically writes the retailer and submits a refund request. The company takes a 25 percent cut of the refund when it's received.  Getting a refund, like how I show you here on Amazon takes time and a bit of effort.  If you don't want to hassle with it, Paribus does it for you.  I have to admit, I was hesitant letting Paribus into my email account.  I've been using it for 2 months now with absolutely no issues AND they've said me over $40!  Not bad!

Ways to Save on Your Own

Here are some other ways to save a few bucks every time you make a purchase.

Add items to a shopping cart and leave. Unless you need an item immediately, put a few days between the moment when you add it to your online shopping cart, and when you check out. You never know what sorts of carrots the retailers may use to lure you over the finish line.  I recently did this buying a Fatboy for my son.  I found one on sale, but I wasn't ready to pull the trigger because the sale wasn't big enough.  Two days later they sent me an email for an additional 30% off.  Bam...purchase made!

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 3.47.08 PMFollow a savings blog. There are hundreds of savings bloggers like MyDFWMommy who watch trends and share great deals.  Sign up for their email list and check the blog daily to learn sales cycles and deals in your area.

Find online discount codes and mobile/printable coupons.  At one time or another, most retailers will use discounts as an incentive to get you to buy.  Take advantage of it! A simple google search will reveal tons of coupon codes to use.  I also share codes and mobile/printable coupons on my site. Sites like RetailMeNot compile these codes, Because these codes constantly cycle in and out of activation, be sure to try a couple until you find one that gives you a decent deal (or at least free shipping).

Stack smart: Some retailers, Kohl's, allow you to “stack” coupon codes, or use more than one. The key is to enter the codes in the proper order to maximize savings. So if you have two coupon codes—one for $10 off your purchase and another for 15 percent off— enter the 15 percent code first, then the $10 code. That way, you’ll get 15 percent off the full price of the item, before the $10 discount.

How to Get an Amazon Price AdjustmentAsk for Price Drop Refunds. Say you’ve purchased an item yesterday, but when you checked the next day, it was now on sale. GRRRR!  That's why I now use Paribus. However, some companies will refund you the price difference if you contact them directly within a certain amount of days. For instance, Amazon will issue you a refund if you notify them within seven calendar days from the delivery date. Use Camelcamelcamel.com to monitor price changes at Amazon.

Buy off-season.  Most big reduction sales occur at the end of the season. Stores need to get rid of all of their previous seasonal clothing to make room for the new trends of the upcoming season. A sale like this is the best time to stock up on items you use a lot.

Learn how to shop your favorite store. Know your favorite retailers, brands, regular prices, promotions and discounts -- and always check the clearance area first to find a similar item on sale to avoid buying two of anything and spending more.  Here are some great resources including Ways to Save at Kohl's and Ways to Save at Target.

ways to save on retailTake advantage of free shipping.  Many online retailers will offer free shipping on occasion.  This is a great time to make a large purchase so you aren't left with the hefty shipping fee. Many stores also offer free shipping if you spend a certain amount. If you’re falling short of that minimum, think about other items you may need that you can purchase ahead of time.

Subscribe to Amazon. If can predict when you’ll need to re-up your supply of coffee or toilet paper, try using Amazon’s “Subscribe and Save” feature to automate the repurchasing process. It saves time and often you'll get an additional discount off the price.

Look for a discounted gift card. There are websites, such as Raise.com, where you can buy and sell gift cards, and sometimes you can buy gift cards for less than the amount on the card. You can often buy a gift card from retailers, hotels and restaurants for 10 or even 20 percent less than the value of the card.

Use a cash back credit card. A cash back credit card will refund you a small percentage of specific types of purchases or even every purchase you make.  I just use one that gives 2 percent back on everything.

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 4.16.50 PMUse cash back sites to get cash rebates. This strategy only works for online retailers, but the discounts can be worth it. Basically, you register with a cash back site such as ebates.com, click through to the online merchant and then the purchases you make there qualify you to get a cash rebate. It takes a few weeks to get your rebate, but the discounts typically range from 1 to 5 percent and sometimes even top 10 percent.

Comparison shop.  Before buying, do some comparison shopping online.  Simply just Google the product name. There are also tons of mobile apps and online resources to help you! Use price-comparison and product-search sites like bizrate.com and froogle.com to compare the prices of items at various online and local merchants

hd ibottaMobile apps. Some apps offer you to redeem special bonuses for doing certain actions. You can earn kicks by doing paid online surveys or merely browsing around product catalogs with ShopKick that can be exchanged to gift cards or special discounts. Ibotta is another great resource! Amazon nails it with Amazon Rewards Visa card with $50 sign up bonus and 3 points added for each dollar spent.

To avoid overpaying and scoring absolutely best deals online, install PriceBlink browser add-on (available for Chrome, Mozilla, Safari). It will save you tons of time by automatically pulling the prices for the same product from numerous merchants, organizing them in a smart chart and even notifying you if there are any coupons available.

Alternatively, you can try Pricegrabber app that does the same thing, plus can scan bar codes and provide “bottom line prices” that include taxes, shipping and other add-on expenses.

Become "friends" of your favorite retailers.  Use social networkingMany merchants, including the Gap and Banana Republic, post special coupons or announce sales first on their Facebook pages.

Sign up for emails and use more emails addresses. Join the email lists of your favorite retailers so you can get coupons and other special offers delivered straight to your inbox.
