Small tweaks to your diet lead to some amazing health benefits

When people hear that I am a health coach, they automatically assume that I don’t eat any “fun” foods. The truth is that I actually believe in the occasional cheat day. I also feel strongly that a few food swaps – switching unhealthy foods with healthier alternatives – can make a big difference.

Click here to get your FREE “Healthy Grocery List”

Here’s a list of 20 simple food swaps that will put you on a fast-track to eating nutritiously…and deliciously!

Instead of potato or corn chips…

Go for organic popcorn (not microwave) sprinkled with nutritional yeast or roasted, salted pumpkin seeds (pepitas)

Why? You still get the salty crunch you’re after while getting lots more nutrients

Instead of white potatoes…

Go for sweet potatoes

Why? They’re packed with antioxidants and have a lower glycemic index than their white cousins

Instead of conventional apples and celery…

Go for organic apples and celery

Why? These crops are the most heavily sprayed with pesticides; avoid conventional at all costs

Instead of wheat bread…

Go for sprouted wheat bread/wraps or gluten-free options

Why? Unsprouted wheat and gluten are tough for the body to digest

Instead of white rice

Go for brown rice

Why? There’s more fiber, more flavor, and it’s less likely to cause a spike in blood sugar

Instead of brown rice

Go for quinoa or amaranth

Why? These have more protein than brown rice

Instead of canned beans…

Go for dried beans, soaked

Why? Most cans contain BPA; soaked beans are easier to digest and you control the salt content

Instead of scrambled eggs…

Go for scrambled non-GMO tofu

Why? Many people are unknowingly allergic to eggs; here’s a high-protein breakfast alternative

Instead of peanuts or peanut butter…

Go for almonds and almond butter

Why? Peanuts are heavily sprayed with pesticides and can harbor mold that give off toxins (aflatoxins); peanuts are also slightly acidic whereas almonds are slightly alkaline

Instead of conventional beef…

Go for grass-fed beef

Why? When the ratio of omega-6 fats to omega-3 fats is more than 4:1, people have more health problems. Grain-fed beef’s ratio is 20:1; grass-fed beef’s ratio is 3:1

Instead of farmed salmon…

Go for wild salmon

Why? Farmed salmon has less omega-3 per ounce, 16 times the toxins of wild, and a bunch of weird additives

Instead of commercial salad dressing…

Go for extra-virgin olive oil + sea salt + fresh cracked black pepper

Why? Commercial dressing contains all kinds of additives not found in nature; best to stay away

Instead of soy sauce…

Go for wheat-free tamari

Why? It’s a kinder, gentler, slightly less salty soy sauce; no gluten means it’s easier to digest

Instead of table salt…

Go for Celtic or Himalayan sea salt or Herbamare

Why? It’s not stripped of natural trace minerals magnesium and calcium; Herbamare includes fresh herbs so a little packs a flavorful punch

Instead of sugar…

Go for brown rice syrup, raw honeyor natural stevia plant

Why? Evil on so many levels, refined sugar has been robbed of all beneficial nutrients the original sugar cane or beet contains. It also lacks chromium which is a chemical needed to maintain healthy blood sugar levels; all-natural options are always the better choice!

Instead of canola oil…

Go for coconut oil

Why? It remains stable during high-heat cooking making it ideal for baking and cooking

Instead of cow’s milk…

Go for unsweetened rice, almond, or hemp milk

Why? Many people are unknowingly allergic to cow’s milk; the alternatives are not phlegm-inducing

Instead of coffee…

Go for Teechino

Why? This caffeine-free alternative that’s a blend of herbs, grains, fruits, and nuts brews up like coffee and has a similar aroma and taste. You get a boost from the nutrients, not stimulants

Instead of soda…

Go for kombucha

Why? This fermented drink is slightly sweet but low in carbs and loaded with probiotics that help to enhance the good bacteria in your gut

Instead of tap water

Go for filtered or spring water

Why? Filtered water takes out a portion of the contaminants in tap water, but not all; your best bet is to try to drink natural spring water filtered from Mother Nature!

***BONUS FOOD SWAP***

This is a big one—instead of eating out, eat in!  You’ll realize the best health benefits of all if you make that one change

Foods Linked to Early Puberty Protect Your Child's Future Health.

What Foods to Avoid To Ward Off Early Puberty In Your Child

Nothing strikes fear into a mother's heart more than the term "early puberty".

Have I gotten your attention?  I hope so because it's become a big problem.  Back in the good ol' days, kids didn't hit puberty until around 14. Now more are hitting puberty between the ages of 8-10..YIKES!

If this is a concern in your home, then you must think FOOD FIRST.   No, I am serious. It's one of those things we don't often consider, but when 70% of your immune system is linked to your gut – which is linked to your endocrine system – it's important to be mindful of what we're putting into our bodies and what will have an impact on our hormonal balance.

Click Here to get Leann's FREE "Hormone Balance Strategies"

Endocrine disrupters are chemicals that interfere with our body's hormone system, causing things like cancer (mainly breast, prostate and thyroid cancer), birth defects, and other developmental disorders, including early puberty. And these endocrine, or hormone disruptors are found in the food we eat.

Our hormone system is a network of chemical messengers that circulate through the body transferring these "messages" to specific organs. This allows our organs to properly develop and function. And hormone disruptors often send the wrong message to our organs.

There is no end to the tricks that endocrine disrupters can play on our bodies: increasing production of certain hormones; decreasing production of others; imitating hormones; turning one hormone into another; interfering with hormone signaling; telling cells to die prematurely; competing with essential nutrients; binding to essential hormones; accumulating in organs that produce hormones. (Environmental Working Group)

Studies have also shown that problems with the hormonal system can be associated with learning disabilities,ADHD, and cognitive problems. So it's not only an issue of your – or your child's – physical health, but mental health as well. Not to mention that early puberty has been linked to lower self-esteem, depression, eating disorders, and earlier loss of virginity.

So what foods are considered hormone disruptors?

  • Dairy – the hormones the cows are given to produce more milk (bGH) can actually confuse your hormonal system.
  • Sugar – after eating too much sugar, it can disrupt your body's insulin and your body's blood sugar levels.  Insulin itself is a hormone that is closely connected to other hormones, including estrogen and testosterone.
  • Soy – soy contains phytoestrogens, which mimic estrogen in the body. This can lead to weight gain, infertility, mood swings and sexual dysfunction.
  • Processed foods – these are often high in health-harming sugars, which goes back to the insulin problem. Processed foods also contain many refined carbohydrates, which also greatly affect insulin levels.
  • Pesticides – studies have shown that many pesticides act as endocrine disrupting chemicals and they bind to hormone receptors and then mimic the natural hormone's action. This can affect reproductive and sexual development (ie: early puberty).

Learn What The Standard American Diet is and Why You May Need to Detox

Do you love eating things like french fries, hot dogs, chicken tenders or sugary sweets? Have you eaten fast food at least once this week? Do you have a soda with many or most of your meals?

These are just some of the unhealthy items that make up the Standard American Diet; SAD for short, but if you ask me, it's also an accurate description.

Click Here to Take the Toxic Test

How do you know if you're following the Standard American Diet? Some of the characteristics of the SAD are:

  • High in processed meat
  • High in saturated fat
  • Low in fiber
  • High in processed foods
  • Low in plant-based foods
  • High in sugary desserts
  • High in refined grains
  • High in dairy
  • Low in seafood

Wikipedia describes the typical American diet as "…about 50% carbohydrate, 15% protein, and 35% fat, which is over the dietary guidelines for the amount of fat (below 30%), below the guidelines for carbohydrate (above 55%), and at the upper end of the guidelines for the amount of protein (below 15%) recommended in the diet."

Sure it's all delicious and perhaps satisfying…until you get a bit older and your doctor tells you that you're at risk for things like cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic illness, and intestinal disorders.

Dr. Mark Hyman says that the problem with the SAD is that it's "energy dense (too many calories) but nutrient poor (not enough vitamins and minerals)." He goes on to advise, "too many empty calories confuse the metabolism and pack on the pounds".

This could explain the obesity rates in the U.S. And why the U.S. is ranked 26th in life expectancy out of 34 other countries

So what can you do to change your health and live a longer life? To start, stop following the Standard American Diet. Eating a diet that consists of real (not processed!) food is the only way to ensure your body's health. And a detox can help you start to do that.

My 10-Day Detox program will show you how to change your eating habits and teach you what foods are delicious, satisfying, and healthy. And I promise, I won't starve you to death!

Ok, I'm just going to come out and say it – I'm not a fan of soy products. I've actually spoken about this before when I listed foods that are often mistaken as being healthy. But it's worth saying again and also emphasizing that soy is especially dangerous in children.

"But Leann, I love edamame and my kids drink soy milk instead of cow's milk."

See, the thing is that the FDA has pushed – along with the soybean industry – the health claims about soy.  What many people don't realize, is that soy is 93% genetically modified. And I have already spoken about the many ways GMOs can affect your health (and how you can avoid them).

GMO foods are created by taking a specific gene from one species and putting it into the DNA of another with the hope that it will produce a desired trait. In the case of soy, genetic engineers created something called 'BT Toxin' to make it easier for farmers to control pests in the crops,   They took a gene from a bacteria that grows naturally and engineered it into the soy crops so the plants would fight off the insects themselves. The BT Toxin essentially makes the insects stomach explode!   GMO's were thought to be safe for humans, but guess what…we have since discovered that GMO's cause gut inflammation and poke holes in our gut lining.   Why is that important?  Because your immune system is 70% in your gut.  Gut inflammation is linked to 95% of diseases.

But Leann, what if I buy Non-GMO soy products?

This is where it gets iffy. Soy is a phytoestrogen (if that word sounds familiar, it's because I just spoke about it in relation to estrogen and menopause). Phytoestrogens are plant-based foods that mimic estrogen in the body. This is why I don't suggest giving soy milk to children; phytoestrogens will pump unnecessary hormones into those little bodies. It's one of those better safe than sorry parenting moments – you're better off sticking with coconut or cashew milk.

We have to remember that your child's diet affects their behavior. Want more information? Check out my webinar, The Food Connection to Your Child's Behavior. Learn how the foods your children eat – especially GMOs – can be linked to allergies, asthma, ADHD, and autism.

And if you want more information about GMOs and the fight to have them reglulated and labeled? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a great place to start. They are currently petitioning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to require GMO labeling.

How would you feel about eating some sand, human hair, duck feathers or wood pulp for your next meal?

I'm going to guess that most of you said "No!"

But the fact is that you probably have had one of those...possibly even this week. Sorry to be the bearer or this bad news, but the fact of the matter is that food manufacturers aren't always 100% transparent about the disgusting ingredients that go into their food.

If the list of ingredients in your favorite foods includes Silicon Dioxide (aka silica, quartz, silicic oxide), L-Cysteine (or Cysteine), and/or Cellulose (aka dietary fiber), then you may want to sit down.

Now I'm not going to say that eating these items will send you to the bathroom or worse, the hospital, but I just want you to be aware of some disgusting items that you may be allowing into your body. The FDA has made many claims that these things are safe for human consumption. And they're never wrong, right?

Silicon Dioxide

What is it? It's a natural compound made up of silicon and oxygen. And in laymen's terms, it's sand. 59% of the earth's crust is made of silicon dioxide.

Why is it used? Because it's an anti-caking agent and absorbs humidity in food.

Where is it found? In foods like salt, soup, coffee creamer, and many processed foods.

FYI: there can be a health concern when exposed to too much silicon dioxide. Just like when miners are exposed for long periods, it can cause lung damage and possibly lung cancer.

L-Cysteine or Cysteine

What is it? It's an amino acid, which is often sourced by human hair, duck feathers and hog hair.

Why is it used? When the hair or feathers are dissolved in acid, the L-Cysteine is obtained and sent to food manufacturer to extend the shelf life of their food. Some companies have come out and said that they use a synthetic version that is not made from human or animal hair.

Where is it found? In items such as cottage cheese, yogurt, pork, chicken, lunch meat, granola and bread.

Cellulose

What is it? A molecule made of up carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It's found in plant matter and wood pulp (but it's cheaper for companies to use cellulose found in wood). It's an indigestible carbohydrate known as dietary fiber.

Why is it used? It's a food additive that adds to a food's fiber content and provides volume, but has no caloric value. It's used in diet foods because it allows you to feel full without consuming too many calories.

Where is it found? Just about everywhere - you'll often find cellulose in many ingredients. Also look for things like "dietary fiber" and "extra fiber".

Remember to always check the ingredients, even for organic products. My goal is for people to be aware of what they're eating and how it affects their health.

How to Get Your Kids to Beg for Veggies New cookbook that solves every mom's problem.

Author Leann Forst Launches “How to Get Your Kids to Beg for Veggies" Hidden Veggie Cookbook on Amazon.

Board certified holistic health practitioner Leann Forst announces the launch of her new cookbook centered on hidden veggie recipes for picky eaters.

DALLAS, April 30, 2015—Author and nutrition expert Leann Forst has launched her new cookbook “How to Get Your Kids to Beg for Veggies: Quick & Easy Hidden Veggie Recipes the Whole Family Will Love” on Amazon.com. Forst, a board certified holistic health practitioner, developed the book to help parents find healthy, sensible and easy-to-prepare meals and snacks that their families will actually enjoy.

According to Forst, the 21st century standard American diet has become a major offender in a variety of chronic childhood illnesses. Processed, high sugar and fatty foods have led to an epidemic of childhood obesity and increased risk for developing heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, to name just a few ill effects of unhealthy eating habits.

Forst says children’s bodies need a foundation of health that comes from the nutrients gained from vegetables. Unfortunately, many parents face obstacles to putting healthy meals on the table every day, or finding healthy foods that will please the family’s picky eaters. With her “Quick and Easy” cookbook, she lifts the burden off parents who want to feed their family nutritiously, without the hassle of complicated and time-consuming preparation.

Forst’s book addresses important discoveries regarding the impact of today’s standard American diet (S.A.D.) and the proven increase in risk factors that diet can play in many serious health issues: asthma, ADHD, obesity, cancer, heart disease, stroke, digestive disorders, autism and more. According to Forst, many childhood illnesses have a distinct dietary common denominator: meals based on processed foods, high in saturated and hydrogenated fats and low in fiber.

Americans have depended on the convenience of processed foods for decades, so it takes a concerted effort to exchange S.A.D. eating habits for healthy and nutritious alternatives.

“There is a connection between diet and the rising numbers of childhood illnesses such as ADHD, autism, allergies and asthma,” Forst says. “This book offers quick and easy solutions to the challenge of increasing dietary nutrients in the foods you serve to help boost children’s immunities to disease.”

The colorful and fun cookbook provides a variety of eye-opening “tricks” for disguising healthy ingredients in the foods children enjoy. By hiding vegetable baby food, mixing in organic fruit and vegetable powders, and mastering other nutritional sleights of hand, Forst teaches parents how to create recipes that are healthy and can please the whole family—even the pickiest eaters.

Some of the mouth-watering recipes included in Forst’s cookbook are: Creamy Pumpkin Oatmeal; the Best Beet Gingerbread Muffins; Easy Pumpkin Pasta Casserole; Savory Turkey Veggie Meatballs; Secret Ingredient Mac & Cheese Cups; Super Sloppy Joes; Sweet Potato Brownies; Banana Lime Cream Pie and more.

Forst became a nutrition expert in response to her 2-year-old son’s battle with chronic asthma. Feeling helpless after a revolving door of physicians and medications failed to improve his condition, she became determined to find answers to her little boy’s health problems on her own.

Forst eventually discovered that his weakened immune system was unable to heal because of the foods the family was eating. She learned about the toxic nature of processed foods and how antioxidants, natural nutrients and phytochemicals work to help the body’s immune system heal and maintain a healthy balance. Armed with this new understanding of diet and nutrition, Forst set about making major changes in planning her family’s meals.

One obstacle she hadn’t planned on was the challenge of addressing the picky eating habits her son had developed. Forst had to get creative to include vegetables and other nutrient sources into her son’s meals. By camouflaging nutrients in his favorite foods, she succeeded in helping her son shed his asthma and become a healthy, happy active youngster.
