This artwork by Kate James, a freshman at Heritage High School, earned the state's top award, the Gold Seal medallion.

Ten high school art students represented Frisco ISD in April at the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE).

The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) hosts the competition each year to showcase top artwork by students in grades 9-12 from across the state.

Entries are judged based on originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for visual art and the interpretation of the student's stated intent.

Students also participate in professional workshops, lectures, slide presentations, demonstrations and outdoor sketching opportunities.

To participate, students must advance from regional competition, where they are interviewed by a certified juror who evaluates their work based on a standard based rubric and their understanding of the art processes involved in the development of their artwork.

At the state level, artwork is rated on a scale of 1-5, with medallions awarded to those students receiving a rating of 4, exemplary. The "Gold Seal" medallion is the top award presented to distinguished works of art chosen by the jury panel.
