Frisco, TX – May 19, 2014 Centennial Urgent Care Center, located in McKinney now has a new name: MedPost Urgent Care. While continuing its partnership with Centennial Medical Center, the center becomes part of a new and growing national network of urgent care centers launched by Tenet Healthcare to provide high-quality, efficient and convenient health services. The MedPost network currently consists of 23 urgent care centers in eight states.

Although it will have a new name, the urgent care center will continue to be staffed with the same physicians and other healthcare professionals. MedPost Urgent Care centers are easy to spot with an eye-catching red and black logo highlighted with an exclamation point. The walk-in centers are open seven days a week with extended hours to provide high quality care for residents in their communities.

“Our goal is to provide the right type of care at the right time in a convenient and compassionate way,” said Dr. Sharad Patel, Chief Operating Officer for MedPost. “We play an important role in providing timely care for people when their primary care physician is not available and also for those individuals who are without a regular doctor, relieving the strain on busy emergency departments that are equipped to handle more serious patient conditions.”

MedPost Urgent Care centers also provide follow-up care and specialty referrals when needed. They are staffed with physician specialists in primary care, internal medicine and emergency medicine, as well as nurse practitioners and other health professionals. The facilities are equipped with X-ray and laboratory capabilities and provide a comprehensive array of services ranging from flu shots and other immunizations to treatment for such things as upper respiratory infections, sinus problems, allergic reactions, fever, ear aches and orthopedic injuries.

Currently, MedPost Urgent Care centers are located in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas.  Most were operating under a variety of different names prior to being rebranded as MedPost; three of the centers are brand new.  The goal is to double the number of MedPost facilities by the end of 2014.

According to Joe Thomason, CEO at Centennial Medical Center,  “We are proud to be a partner with MedPost Urgent Care to provide quality, convenient care. By renaming our Centennial Urgent Care Center as part of the MedPost network, we will be able to participate in building a strong, trusted network of urgent care centers around the country.”

Frisco, Texas (April 29, 2014) –  Centennial Medical Center is proud to announce that the honor of Tenet Hero has been awarded to case manager Joan Williams of Plano. Williams is a natural advocate who cares about people and has worked for Centennial as a case manager since 2007.

Tenet’s Heroes program is designed to honor employees who exemplify the company’s values of quality, integrity, service, innovation and transparency. Tenet Heroes nominees are recognized as staff members who frequently go above and beyond the call of duty in clinical or non-clinical roles. No more than two individuals are nominated from each hospital, regional office, home office and outpatient center for the esteemed award.

Williams goes to bat for patients who need equipment or procedures but are unable to get them without additional paperwork and representation. Before receiving her RN degree, Williams was a licensed paramedic and practiced in emergency medicine.

When she’s not helping patients at work, Williams helps community members in need. She and her husband are active in several local philanthropies and  have even taken in individuals who found themselves temporarily displaced or homeless.

Embodying the true spirit of the campus, Williams brings a combination of care and professionalism to the workplace and Centennial is proud to announce her as its most recent Tenet Hero.

FRISCO, Texas  – April 25, 2014 – The surgical team at Centennial Medical Center in Frisco is proud to provide patients with some of the most minimally invasive surgical options, including the single-incision, robotic-assisted procedure using the da Vinci® Surgical System. During a da Vinci® Single-Site surgery, one tiny incision is made in the belly button, approximately one inch long, resulting in a virtually scar-free procedure.

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the specialized Single-Site™ instruments for use with the da Vinci Surgical System in December 2011. By introducing the technology at Centennial, surgeons are able to offer procedures with a faster recovery rate, less time lost from work, low blood loss and less pain during recovery.

During the procedure, the surgeon sits comfortably at a console, viewing a 3-D, high-definition image of the patient’s anatomy. The surgeon uses controls below the viewer to move the instrument arms and camera. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.

Unlike traditional robotic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this technology allows for a single incision in the belly button where instruments are placed and the procedure progresses. Offering this technologically advanced surgery demonstrates Centennial’s leadership in providing patients with the most minimally invasive surgical options available.

Centennial  offers various types of robotic-assisted surgeries at its Frisco location  in addition to a wide range of minimally invasive conventional laparoscopic surgeries. For information on robotic and other minimally invasive surgical procedures available at Centennial, contact us at 972-963-3333 or visit our website at www.CentennialMedCenter.com

About da Vinci Surgery with Single-Site™

da Vinci Surgery with Single-Site™ Instruments is cleared for use in gallbladder removal, and for hysterectomy and ovary removal for benign conditions. Patients who bleed easily, have abnormal blood clotting, are pregnant or morbidly obese are typically not candidates for minimally invasive surgery, including da Vinci Surgery with Single-Site™ Instruments. The safety and effectiveness of this device for use in the performance of general laparoscopic abdominal surgery procedures have not been established.

Colorectal cancer. Those two words no one wants to hear. Especially the second one. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States with nearly 102,480 new cases of the disease diagnosed in 2013. Fortunately, the death rate from colorectal cancer has been dropping for more than 20 years due to early screenings and improved treatments.

Undergoing testing to diagnose colorectal cancer may be necessary because of abnormal results from a screening exam or if there are symptoms of the disease, such as a change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, weakness, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool.

Diagnosis may begin with a complete medical history and physical examination. Endoscopic tests to  check for colorectal polyps also may be necessary, including a sigmoidoscopy of colonoscopy (procedures used to see inside the colon and rectum), and imaging tests such as a barium enema or virtual colonoscopy. A biopsy is done on any abnormal-looking tissues that are removed during a colonoscopy to confirm the diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Other imaging tests may be required to determine if a suspicious area is cancerous, learn if the cancer has spread or find out if treatment has been effective. These tests include computer tomography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and angiography.

Once colorectal cancer has been diagnosed, treatment will be determined based on the stage and type of cancer, how far it has spread, overall health, side effects of treatment and long-term prognosis. Surgery usually is recommended for early stage colon cancer. The procedure calls for the removal of part of the colon and nearby lymph nodes. Some stage 0 or early stage 1 tumors can be taken out by removing the base of the polyp or the superficial cancer and a small margin of surrounding tissue.

Colorectal cancer also may be treated with three different types of radiation therapy, which use high-energy rays or particles to destroy cancer cells.

  • External-beam radiation therapy focuses radiation on the cancer from outside the body;
  • Endocavitary radiation therapy delivers radiation through a hand-held device placed into the anus; and
  • Internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy) involves placing small pellets of radioactive material next to or directly into the cancer.

Chemotherapy, which involves administering drugs either into a vein or orally, can be part of colorectal cancer treatment plan as well. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may be given along with radiation before surgery to try to shrink some rectal cancers. Adjuvant chemotherapy is given after surgery in case the cancer returns.

Diaper rash ointment, pain medicines and perfume probably do not come to mind as serious health hazards, but they are among the most common poisons ingested by children. Poisons are any substance that is swallowed, inhaled or enters the body through the eyes, ears or skin and causes harm if it is not used the right way, by the right person, or in the correct amount. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unintentional poisoning causes more than 700,000 emergency department visits annually and is second only to motor vehicle accidents as a cause of unintentional injury death.

Poisoning can happen when it is least expected, such as when a child eats some vitamins thinking they are candy. Some other common poisons that children may encounter include nail polish, lotions, make-up, cosmetics, plants, cleaning products such as laundry detergent or bleach, over-the-counter pain and cold relievers, thermometers and topical preparations including acne cream, calamine lotion or hydrogen peroxide.

Common poisons for adults include pain medicines like aspirin, oxycodone, acetaminophen, methadone and ibuprofen, sedatives, sleeping pills, antipsychotics, antidepressants, cardiovascular drugs, household cleaning products and alcohol. Some of the most dangerous poisons for both adults and children include antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid, drain openers, rust removers, toilet bowl and oven cleaners, kerosene, lamp oil, gasoline and pesticides.

Poison prevention begins with being aware of possible hazards around the house and taking the necessary precautions to prevent poisoning.

  • Keep all harmful household products, including medications, cleaners, paints and pesticides, in cabinets or drawers that either lock or have a safety latch.
  • Do not put poisonous products in food or drink containers. Store them in original containers and make sure they are correctly labeled.
  • Do not mix household products together. Mixing ammonia and bleach together, for example, can produce toxic gases.
  • Purchase products that have child-resistant packaging, such as medicine bottles with safety caps.
  • When around children, do not refer to medicine as “candy” or by any other appealing name.
  • Store food and cleaners in separate cabinets or rooms.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as gloves, long sleeves or shoes when spraying pesticides or other chemicals. Put potentially poisonous products away after use.
  • Open the window and turn on the fan when using chemical products inside.
  • Follow label directions when taking or giving medications.
  • Place carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

Despite best efforts, poisonings can occur. In these situations, remain calm and call 9-1-1 if the victim has collapsed, is having seizures or convulsions, or not breathing. If the victim has swallowed poison and is alert and awake, have them spit out any remaining poison. Do not have them vomit or use syrup of ipecac. If poison comes in contact with the skin, remove clothing and rinse with lukewarm water for 15 minutes. Poison in the eye can be flushed with a steady stream of room temperature water. If poisonous fumes are inhaled, go outside for fresh air immediately. For any questions about poisons or poison prevention, call the Center for Poison Control and Prevention at 1-800-222-1222.

2014 Showcase and Career Fair Centennial CEO Joe Thomason and event attendees cut a ribbon, signaling the beginning of the 2014 Showcase and Career Fair.

On Feb. 20, Centennial Medical Center partnered with Frisco ISD (FISD) and Collin College to present a Showcase and Career Fair at the college conference center. Both Collin College and FISD students, grades six through 12, listened to presentations from a variety of local professionals, including teachers, judges, entrepreneurs, health care professionals, chefs, artists, computer specialists and counselors.

Centennial CEO Joe Thomason and FISD Coordinator of Student Achievement and Involvement Dr. Larry Lewis were both on hand as eager students received in-depth looks at select professions. Speakers discussed the education and training required to obtain their positions as well as their day-to-day responsibilities. Collin College instructors were also available to advise attendees on the opportunities the college provides and how a degree enhances the future of both undecided students and individuals who’ve already established careers.

The event, in its first year, was designed to encourage students to be proactive in their search for a profession that they enjoy and to help them decipher what high school or college courses will properly equip them for a successful future.

Although this was Centennial’s first opportunity to partner with Collin College, the hospital has recently been involved in several FISD initiatives, including the Student and Parent Empowerment Program, which seeks to help families address topics like fitness, health, leadership, responsibility and how to build a successful future.
