Renowned Artist Peter Pearson Brings the Ancient Art of Iconography to St. Philip's Frisco

Gifted and widely-recognized American iconographer and Episcopal Priest, Peter Pearson, will be in residence at St. Philip’s Frisco January 4th-10th to create a rare, life-sized icon of Jesus Christ specifically commissioned for the church. The majestic “Christ in Glory” icon, a standing image of Jesus, will be installed directly behind the altar in St. Philip’s worship space upon its completion.

Far more than decorative art, iconography blends ancient technique and spiritual symbolism to bring to life the people and events of Scripture.   This ancient art, which typically utilizes gesso, paints or crushed-mineral pigments, gold leaf and varnish, has recently seen a resurgence of interest in the modern church for those seeking a more accessible image of the divine.

Peter Pearson has been studying and painting Byzantine icons for 45 years, as well as teaching iconography for 25 years. He began at age 12, and after being self-taught for many years has studied, and continues to study, with renowned iconographers throughout North America. Each of Pearson’s icons is individually designed and executed.

Rev. Greg Methvin, Rector of St. Philip’s Frisco, is thrilled to welcome Peter. "It is such an honor to have Peter Pearson on our campus to complete this magnificent, sacred work of art. The icon will not only enhance the beauty of our worship space, but more importantly will be a spiritual centerpiece that allows us to connect more deeply and meaningfully with God."

All work on the St. Philip’s icon will be done on the premises between January 4th and January 10th. We invite you to view the icon in process, as well as learn more about iconography, as our Elementary school students visit with him Tuesday, January 5th from 9:30-10:00 am; or during St. Philip’s Epiphany Party Wednesday, January 6th from 7:00-8:00 pm. The completed icon will be unveiled during worship services on Sunday, January 10 at 9:30 and 11:00 am. Peter will have a short talk and Q&A session following the 11:00 am service.

St. Philip’s campus is located at 6400 Stonebrook Parkway in Frisco. To learn more, visit stphilipsfrisco.org.
