St. John Lutheran Church of Frisco celebrates charter Sunday

On Sunday, December 13, 2015, St. John Lutheran Church in Frisco was formally recognized as a congregation and officially received as a member of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LC-MS).

The church was developed as a mission project of Faith Lutheran Church of Plano.

“It is a joy for me to help this mission get started and to see her grow,” said Faith Lutheran Church of Plano Senior Pastor Rev. James Woelmer of Lucas.  “It’s also a joy for me and our other pastors to deliver the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation for God’s people.”

St. John Lutheran Church’s constitution was recently approved by the Texas District of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.  On Sunday, December 13, 2015, St. John Lutheran Church in Frisco celebrated its charter Sunday.  The church was formally recognized as a congregation and was officially received as a member of the LC-MS, Texas District.

“The members promised to support the office of the holy ministry in order that the Word of God may be preached and the sacraments administered according to His institution,” added Woelmer. “They also promised to support the work of the congregation in making disciples of all nations by baptizing and teaching. In the prayers on that day, we thanked God for dwelling among the people of St. John with His holy word and sacraments.  We also asked that God continue to protect and guide her always.”

44 people attended the charter Sunday special service.   Rev. Stephen W. Kieser, associate pastor of Faith Lutheran Church of Plano and headmaster of Faith Lutheran School of Plano, preached on the theme “Rejoice in the Lord always.”  He talked about giving God all the glory for His work in establishing this new congregation.  Woelmer assisted in the service with the liturgy and administering the Lord’s Supper.

The idea for developing a mission church in Frisco began in May 2014 when several families asked Faith Lutheran Church in Plano to help start a mission church in Frisco.

“These families wanted a church that follows the liturgy, sings hymns and is a faithful Lutheran Church,” said Woelmer.

The elders of Faith Lutheran Church of Plano researched the possibility of starting a mission in Frisco.  The group secured financial assistance to fund the church startup and determined how Faith Lutheran Church staff could assist with preaching and in other ways. A donor purchased hymnals, communion ware, a cross and other items for the mission.

“Members of Faith Lutheran Church of Plano resolved to offer prayer, support and guidance for this new mission.  The pieces came together,” added Woelmer.

The first worship service was Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Frisco. In May 2015, worship was moved to Holiday Inn Express in Frisco.  Those who attended decided to call the new mission St. John Lutheran Church.

St. John Lutheran Church of Frisco will soon start the process of calling their first pastor.

“May God continue to bring peace and comfort to those at St. John and to those in the greater Frisco area,” said Woelmer.  “To God be all the glory.”
